Stonyhurst College, a prestigious boarding school in Lancashire, UK, approached us to modernize their lighting infrastructure across their historic campus buildings. The existing traditional lighting system was not only contributing to high energy costs but also required frequent maintenance, which was particularly challenging in their heritage buildings.
Working closely with the college’s facilities team, we developed a comprehensive LED retrofit solution that would respect the architectural integrity of their Grade I listed buildings while delivering significant energy savings. The project involved replacing 300 traditional 50W fixtures with energy-efficient 5W LED lighting systems, carefully selected to maintain the appropriate ambiance for both educational and residential spaces.
The results exceeded expectations, with the new LED lighting system reducing the college’s energy consumption by 90%, resulting in annual savings of 49,500 kWh and £12,500 in electricity costs. Beyond the financial benefits, the improved lighting quality has enhanced the learning environment for students and staff, while the reduced maintenance requirements have freed up resources for other essential facilities management tasks. With an annual CO₂ reduction of 9.5 tonnes, this project demonstrates how historic institutions can embrace modern, sustainable solutions without compromising their architectural heritage.
